Anthea Callen’s lecture considers some of the issues raised in her new book, The Work of Art: Plein air painting and artistic identity in nineteenth-century France. Outlining the reasons for the rise to prominence of landscape painting as a genre in nineteenth-century France, she looks especially at questions of gender identity and why so few of these painters were women. Arguing that the naturalist impulse to work outdoors, before the actual landscape motif, entailed new methods and practices that effectively excluded women, she will show how landscape art became associated with masculinity and male virility. She will focus on the painting of Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) and the Impressionists. Anthea Callen was until June this year Professor of Art (Practice-led Research) in the School o...

ART|JOG|14 - IVAA Public Discussion Forum EMPOWERED: New Relations, Dynamics, and Strategies in Contemporary Asian Art Scene Today Session I: New Strategies of Artist Initiative/Community Spaces: Speakers: Malcolm Smith, Prihatmoko Moki - Crack Studio, Yogyakarta ART|JOG|14, Langgeng Art Foundation, Yogyakarta, 8 June 2014 From the last 5 years or so, there have been a rapid change in the global visual art scene, particularly in Asia. Today, there are art exhibitions and art events in new spaces and hubs flourishing in many places . Major exhibitions are increasingly getting more colossal and contemporary visual art is getting the attention of global visual art scene with more ‘blockbuster’ programs, including the Biennales in major Asian countries, Singapore Art Stage, Art Basel in Hong Kong, and including ArtJOG as a part of the whole current ecosystem of the art world. This brings out a more complex network of art infrastructure that in many ways affects the artists and art workers regarding how they work and orientation of art making today. It offers plenty of promises and prospects yet also becomes more obscure and fast-paced than before – while the art market, as glamorous as it may seem, remain an unsteady, uncertain source of support. The art society’s culture is no longer about having regular exhibitions and visiting your local galleries but also to be a part of the vast, growing regional network, with major art events that rely on momentum and festivities become the main hubs for increasing leverage in the arts, meaning more competition among every party involved in the art scene. How should the art scene be mapped by its own practitioners, in terms of developing their own strategies and positions withing the infrastructure and creating their own trajectories? What roles should be defined or redefined in today’s art infrastructure apart from the usual artist-gallery-curator-collector power relations? What kind of new ways can the artists follow to cope with ever-changing social, professional and cultural enviroment while maintaing their profession as well as artistic stance? And more importantly, how do art events – big or small scale – can serve as both a sustainable career-making trajectory and a significant, relevant cultural event? ‘Empowered: New Relations, Structures, and Strategies in Contemporary Asian Art Scene Today’ is one-day public forum initiated by ArtJOG and Indonesian Visual Art Archive (IVAA), in conjunction with ArtJOG 6, which will be held in June 2014. The forum will invite a number of art practitioners within the Asian region to share their perspectives regarding the issues above, to provide more insights and relevant perspectives that can be fruitful for the new art public, particularly the recent younger generation of artists and creative communities that have become one of the main network of ArtJOG and IVAA. How are new business models and technology facilitating new ties between investors and art? Who will provide liquidity to the system and how? What are the limitations, opportunities, and consequences of new art-investment business models? The second cluster of short presentations—the highlight session of this year's International Art Industry Forum—featured overviews of seven of the industry's most innovative and promising young technology firms. Each speaker was given just 10 minutes to present the business models of online ventures that are reshaping the industry. The session was led by Andrea Jungmann, Sotheby's Austria, Vienna, and included Sebastian Cwilich, Art.sy, New York; David Grosz, Artifex Press, New York; Ezra Konvitz, ArtStack, London; Nahema Mehta, Art Remba, New York ; Robert Norton, s[edition], London ; Boris Pevzner, Collectrium, New York; and Dan Teran, Artsicle, New York.

ART|JOG|14 - IVAA Public Discussion Forum EMPOWERED: New Relations, Dynamics, and Strategies in Contemporary Asian Art Scene Today Session I: New Strategies of Artist Initiative/Community Spaces: Speakers: INDIEGUERILLAS: Santi Ariestyowanti. ART|JOG|14, Langgeng Art Foundation, Yogyakarta, 8 June 2014 From the last 5 years or so, there have been a rapid change in the global visual art scene, particularly in Asia. Anthea Callen was until June this year Professor of Art (Practice-led Research) in the School of Art, College of Arts and Social Sciences, Australian National University, Canberra. She is also Professor Emeritus of Visual Culture at the University of Nottingham in the UK. She is a widely published scholar of international repute and also a painter. Her expertise in art history, visual culture and the gender politics of visual representation spans the eighteenth to twentieth centuries, notably in France and Britain; her research specialism in nineteenth-century artists’ materials and techniques means she works regularly with museum conservators and curators.
